Dance is freedom of expression. Dance is not an act with a set of body movements. It is not something that you duplicate. Dance has to be a natural expression of oneself. Many people learn to dance from someone or some institute and they get various degrees of mastery on the techniques and moves. They are only concerned about the mastery of the moves. But a true seeker of dance would not just stop at the techniques.
One will go beyond the moves and question” What is the source of this dance” This will open up a completely different domain. Before asking this question one would think he knows the dance. But not after asking this question. After this question comes, one feels that the dance that one learned all these days is just movements. There is no real feeling in it. The heart will not suffice with them anymore. It is interesting to know the origin of it.
Of course, all the dance forms have originated from Shiva in the form of Nataraja. But it is not the factual information that we are interested in. We wanted to know what is the state of being from which dance expressed out of him as a natural phenomenon. If a dancer understands and experiences that state by oneself, he has touched the source of it. Then his dance will be a real dance with joy, not just a few coordinated body movements. The quality of his dance will be very different. There will be completeness in it. Only then his dance will be a true expression of oneself.
